On Set Design
REILLY (R) The creative process, for some, involves having a clear thematic vision and conjuring images to suit. For me, the images come first and the meaning is discovered in the writing. Similarly, upon constructing a set made of garbage in my own house I didn’t think I would be examining my own consumption. But, in the four months I spent living in the hell hole we created, I saw the entire product of what two people can consume. Every day, I would hide upstairs from the mess, but it was inescapable. It was a daily reminder that your waste never really goes away, it just goes somewhere you can’t see it. Now that all the garbage is gone from my house, I’ve realized I’m happy with less...much less.
The film’s Producer, Director of Photography and Editor LUCAS STANTON (L) also discussed the process of constructing the hoarder house:
L At first I thought we would never be able to produce enough trash to fill the place, but in just the first month it became apparent that we would have more than enough. I felt ashamed, not just of myself, but the whole human race and our addiction to single-use items. But strangely, by the third month I was actually proud of our little trash mountain that we were building. I became obsessed with keeping everything I touched. The strangest sensation was washing it bit by bit. Each item I scrubbed would bring back the memory of the time I consumed it.
