On Editing

MARK (M) It would be great to learn more about your approach to the film's editing. You hold on certain shots (usually close-ups) for a fairly long period of time and incorporate a lot of quick cuts/flashes. Please tell us about how you juxtapose fast and slow pacing (especially during the film’s climax) to maximize intensity and tension on screen?

OLIVIER (O) It was very important to convey the protagonist's desire for control as well as his lack of it through the film’s editing. He continuously tries to garner the approval of people around him. So from an editing standpoint, when he has the attention he desires from others and feels powerful, our eyes are locked on him, but as soon as he loses it and people start confronting him about his lies and fabrications, our eyes fly away and focus on whoever was now controlling the scene.

On Process & Discovery

M In making and finishing the film, what did you discover and learn that you might adopt or further explore in future projects?

O Working for a suicide hotline, mental health has always fascinated me. I love to try and understand all the different ways people react to the infinite variety of experiences life has to offer. I would love to explore different problematic characters in abstract ways as I did with this project.

Mark’s Final Thoughts

  • I really enjoyed learning more about his editing approach - Olivier not only tries to conceptually express control and desire through flash cuts, but also through certain actions such as the protagonist clicking his fingers. Interestingly, Olivier further emphasizes the mystical atmosphere of control through heavily incorporating clicking of the fingers within the film’s score.
